Recently, my husband and I received a quote to pressure wash and seal our aggregate driveway. There are just times in your life that you just don’t want to DIY and you want to hire it out. The quote cost – $3,000.00. Yes, three thousand dollars! The guy didn’t know me and I gave him the look – Are kidding me?! I can do it for about five hundred dollars at the most.

Truth is – if some contractors think you can’t do it, it’s going to cost you more money if you don’t research the cost. Not all of them. I’ve had a few that encouraged lower costs. But what do you do when you think they might be over charging?

  1. Do your research. How much does your supplies cost?
  2. Do the math. How much are you willing to pay the contractor? (Using my quote above, I would be paying over $400/hr for 6 hours.)  A lot more if the job takes less time.
  3. Get multiple quotes. Get recommendations from friends, or sites like Thumbtack. And don’t forget to check for references and their insurance.

In the end, my husband and I picked a beautiful, sunny, cool day to pressure wash and seal our driveway. I saved him $2,500.00. He’s a blessed man!
