Finding a kitchen island for our kitchen was a difficult task. The selections where either too big, too small or too expensive for our area, so I decided to build my own. The one pictured below was my first one I built. We lost that one in a flood. Later, I needed a table for our laundry room, so I built the second one into a folding area and took off the doors to create a dog crate for Reagan. I built a new one later for our kitchen island that I’ve featured. Here’s what I did.
Bought an unfinished cabinet at Lowes. Cost was about $99.00
Measured the sides and back of the cabinet. Bought a small sheet of wood and had Lowe’s cut to fit the sides and back.
Measured the corners and purchased corner trim.
Used trim nails to attach sides and back to cabinet. Same thing with the corner trims. Added two wood support brackets to the side.
Painted to my choice.
Drilled holes in doors and applied hardware.
Purchased a remnant piece of quartz countertop to fit. I created an overhang.(support brackets)
Island was finished in a day, however, there was a wait on the countertop. Total cost: approximately $350.00
Always use your imagination. If it doesn’t work in one place, make it work somewhere else.
